Microsoft Excel - Intermediate

Introduction

This course is designed to give experienced users of Excel knowledge of more advanced commands and functions and how to apply these in their own business challenges. This one-day instructor led course will be a combination of group discussion and hands-on practice. Each section of the course will provide an opportunity to explore the new subject area, followed by an exercise or activity to reinforce learning. All courses are highly interactive and we encourage all delegates to join in, to enhance their learning process.

Course Aim

To provide the delegates with a clear understanding of the mathematical capability of Excel, tailor spreadsheets for specific needs, introduce Special Functions and examine the use of Database functionality

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Create a formula using the IF Function: to test a condition and return values depending on the result
  • Create a formula using the VLOOKUP or HLOOKUP function: to lookup up values in a data table
  • Create and use formulae to calculate values from different worksheets and workbooks
  • Link data and charts from Excel with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Hide and protect cells and formulae
  • Use names to define cells and groups of cells; use these names in formulae

Pre-requisites

We recommend that all those who attend are able to:

  • Use Excel at introductory level

Course Content

  • IF functions
  • VLOOKUP/HLOOKUP functions
  • Naming cells and ranges
  • Linking spreadsheets, workbooks, applications (Excel with Word or PowerPoint)
  • Cell Protection
  • Hiding columns, rows and formulae; grouping columns and rows for easy hiding/showing
  • Applying conditional number formats to cells
  • Applying data validation to cells; add input text and error messages
  • Functions and features to combine data from multiple cells/splitting data into multiple cells
  • Data forms: to enter, delete and search for data
  • Sorting: from top to bottom, left to right and in custom sequences of your choice
  • AutoFilter: to show only data you require from a data list
  • Subtotals: apply to data to show totals and averages of different sub-sets of data
  • Creating Charts
